The updated portfolio scoring criteria for the 2023-2024 application cycle is now available. Much of this has stayed the same as last year, which is great news for most who have been preparing their portfolios accordingly. The total score this year is out of 45. All of the information below is sourced from the official scoring criteria from the 2023-2024 application cycle.
Please note, additional undergraduate degrees have been removed from scoring according to national policy for all medical and dental specialist recruitment.

Domain 1: Commitment to Specialty
Points Available:
10 Points → Multiplesignificant exposures to the work of a radiology department
6 Points → Onesignificant exposure to the work of a radiology department
3 Points → Attended a radiology based course or conference of at least 1 day in length
0 Points → None of the above
Explanation:
'Significant' = 3 or more full days
'Exposure' = time spent in a radiology department either through a taster week, undergraduate student-selected component or elective, or a research project (not lab base) where you spent time in a radiology department / worked with a radiologist
'Multiple' = meaningfully different, for example, more than one of the above types. A taster week in different settings would qualify for the highest descriptor, but not two taster weeks offering the same experience. Could also be more than two attendances at MDT preparation and meeting outside the taster week setting, or more than two attendances at radiology based list such as one stop breast clinic or interventional radiology list outside the taster week setting.
Examples of Sufficient Evidence:
Letter confirming a placement or taster week from a clinical or educational supervisor
Official university documents confirming radiology placement
Details of a radiology-based project with evidence of your involvement
Course / conference attendance certificate
Domain 2: Leadership & Management
Points Available:
7 Points → Hold/have held a national-level leadership or managerial role involving radiology
5 Points → Hold/have held a national level leadership or managerial role not involving radiology, but relating to healthcare OR Hold/have held a local /regional level leadership or a managerial role involving radiology
3 Points → Hold/have held a national level leadership or managerial role outside healthcare OR Hold/have held a local/regional leadership or management role not involving radiology but relevant to healthcare
2 Points → Hold/have held a local /regional leadership or management role outside of healthcare
0 Points → None of the above
Explanation:
'Local' = a single hospital Trust, University etc
'Regional' = a collection of hospital trusts, or across multiple universities within a particular region
'National' = activity within the England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the UK as a whole
'Outside Healthcare' = charity, sport or creative arts
'Involving radiology' = for example, role within specialist society, royal college of radiologists, fellowship position etc.
'Not involving radiology' = for example, BMA, undergraduate society, royal college, mess committee, foundation rep etc.
Any roles must have been for a MINIMUM of 6 MONTHS
Examples of Sufficient Evidence:
Confirmation of election/appointment of role
Evidence of attendance at committee meetings
Letters from the chair or senior figure within the relevant organization
Evidence should specify the applicant by name, the role, and the major responsibilities thereof.
Domain 3: Teaching & Training
Points Available:
5 Points → Have made a major contribution to a national or international teaching programme
4 Points → Have made a major contribution to a local or regional teaching programme
2 Points → Have evidence of providing organised teaching or training
0 Points → None of the above
Explanation:
'Major contribution' = you lead or organised a multi-session teaching programme, either personally or more formally as part of a teaching fellowship
'Teaching Programme' = regular teaching for 3months or longer
One-off teaching, even if delivered nationally, would still only give you 2 points
Local or regional teaching can include teaching delivered outside of medicine, such as to school students
For the purposes of this section a formal teaching programme should have a duration of at least 3 months in total.
Examples of Sufficient Evidence:
Official documentation indicating your role as an organiser or deliverer of teaching
Feedback collated from all sessions and signed by a 3rd party
Domain 4: Formal Teaching Qualifications
Points Available:
5 Points → Hold a formal masters level teaching qualification or above
4 Points → Hold a formal teaching qualification awarded at the postgraduate level (e.g. CILT, PGCert, PGDip) or FHEA
2 Points → Evidence of other training in teaching methods after study of at least 2 days (e.g. Train the Trainers)
0 Points → No formal qualification in teaching/education
Explanation
Unlike in other sections, if you obtained a teaching qualification before commencing your undergraduate degree, you can claim for this here.
For this section only, formal teaching qualifications obtained prior to studying medicine can be scored (e.g., if you completed a PGCE before your medical degree).
Examples of Sufficient Evidence:
Official degree certificate or transcript clearly stating the qualification and indicating the level of study.
Domain 5: Audit & Quality Improvement
Points Available:
7 Points → I have led 2 or more audits or quality improvement projects relating to radiology which can be shown to have resulted in changed practice
5 Points → I have led an audit or quality improvement project relating to radiology which can be shown to have resulted in changed practice
3 Points → I have led an audit or quality improvement project but not meeting all criteria above
2 Points → I have contributed to, but not led an audit or quality improvement project
0 Points → None of the above
Explanation:
'Leading a project' = a major role in conception, data collection, analysis, and presentation
'Changed practice' = demonstrable difference in a measurable outcome, such as a closed-loop second audit cycle showing better compliance to the gold standard, or a QI project showing improvements in a particular measure
'Relating to radiology' = diagnostic imaging formed a major part of the project
Examples of Sufficient Evidence:
Slides from the audit presentation
Formal portfolio assessment from a supervisor confirming your role.
Demonstration of changed practice could be via a closed-loop second audit cycle showing better compliance to gold standard, or by improvement in a quality metric, etc.
Domain 6: Academic Achievements
Points Available:
5 Points → I hold a postgraduate research degree (PhD, MD, MDRes, etc)
4 Points → At least one peer-reviewed publication relating to radiology as the first author
3 Points → At least one peer-reviewed publication, not relating to radiology, as first author OR At least one oral or poster presentation relating to radiology at a national or international level, as first author
2 Points → At least one peer-reviewed publication, not as first author OR At least one oral or poster presentation at a national or international level, as first author
1 Point → At least one oral or poster presentation, at any level
1 Point → Published case reports or 'letter-to-the-editor' in peer-reviewed journal
1 Point → Involvement in a research team as part of an elective, intercalated degree, extended student research and enterprise project, academic foundation programme, academic summer school or another research taster
0 Points → None of the above
Explanation:
'Relating to radiology' = diagnostic imaging formed a major part of the project. The subject field can be surgical, medical etc. just as long as they have a significant imaging focus
Publications and presentations can be related to audit or QI projects (i.e. you can score in this domain and domain 5 for a single project)
Presentations should come from a process of peer review, i.e. you submit your work to a conference and a panel reviews this and awards you the presentation, rather than just being invited to speak without submitting anything.
Examples of Sufficient Evidence:
Degree certificate
Your ORCID summary
Citation including DOI/indexing service identifier (e.g. PMID)
Conference catalogues
Domain 7: Prizes & Awards
Points Available:
6 Points → Prize awarded by a recognised radiology institution/specialist society or at national/international level meeting OR Distinction award of final year primary medical qualification (or equivalent)
3 Points → Prize awarded by a recognised regional-level institution or meeting
2 Points → More than one prize awarded by a local organisation or meeting
1 Point → One prize awarded by a local organisation or meeting
0 Points → None of the above
Explanation:
A prize must have been open to all peers at that your level of training and in the selected geographic region. i.e. all medical undergraduates or all postgraduates within a nation, region, or specific locality.
Scholarships and elective bursaries may be included in this section as long as these were open to a competitive application.
'Local' = a single hospital Trust, University etc
'Regional' = a collection of hospital trusts, or across multiple universities within a particular region
